Ein letztes Mal habe ich mit Factor 5 auf der Ami Expo ’92 gesprochen – Inhalt waren unter Anderem die Konsolenumsetzungen von Turrican. Geplant war eine Ver\u00f6ffentlichung in McDisk #6.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In einem fr\u00fcheren Beitrag<\/a> habe ich schon ausf\u00fchrlich geschrieben, wie ich dieses Interview neu wiederentdeckt habe. In K\u00fcrze: Als ich Anfang 2019 alte Amiga-Disketten auf den PC \u00fcberspielte, waren darunter auch viele Dateien, die ich l\u00e4ngst vergessen hatte. Zum Beispiel auf einer Diskette, deren Beschriftung gar nicht darauf hindeutete, dass hier alte Interviews schlummern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gedacht war das folgende Interview zur Ver\u00f6ffentlichung im Diskettenmagazin McDisk<\/a> #6, das allerdings niemals erschien. Um den Jahreswechsel 1992\/1993 fand auch mein R\u00fcckzug aus der Amiga-„Szene“ statt, weil ich mich einerseits etwas mehr auf mein Studium konzentrieren wollte, aber auch weil wir anfingen, unser Eishockey-Spiel<\/a> zu entwickeln. Deswegen habe ich wohl nicht weiter versucht, die Interviews an anderer Stelle unterzubringen – und sie gerieten in Vergessenheit. Erst recht, weil ich dann im Sp\u00e4tsommer 1995 auf den PC umgestiegen bin und ziemlich schnell den Amiga beiseite gelegt habe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Im Begleitschreiben an das McDisk Redaktionsteam fand ich die Info, dass mein Gespr\u00e4chspartner Thomas Engel war. Die originale Diktierkassette bzw. Abschrift ist wohl nicht mehr existent, daher gehen s\u00e4mtliche etwaigen Fehler auf meine Kappe – hier ist das Interview von Oktober 1992, gef\u00fchrt auf der Ami Expo ’92 in K\u00f6ln. MD:<\/strong> Of how many levels will Turrican III (T3) consist?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F5:<\/strong> T3 will have about five levels, and the last one will be one big opponent. We finished already three levels, and the graphics is nearly done.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

MD:<\/strong> How big will be the module?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F5:<\/strong> On the Genesis (Mega Drive), it will have 8 MBit, on the Super Famicom, there are only 4 MBit, so this is the reason why it is not so powerful as the Genesis-version.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

MD:<\/strong> And the sound? Who will do the sound?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F5:<\/strong> The whole sound will be done by Chris Huelsbeck, and Chris will use all possibilities of these machines.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n

MD:<\/strong> I recently read in a software-mag, that on the Genesis, you are able to „rotate“ platforms – what does that mean??<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F5:<\/strong> We are able to rotate platforms around one fixed point, so that they circle around that point. We use the same technique by rotating single enemies (ed.:I saw a big snake or something like that winding through the screen and rotating and it just looked great!)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

MD:<\/strong> Back to your development system: What would I get if I’d buy one?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F5:<\/strong> You would get all you need… The only things that lack are: a PC (as fast as possible) and the confidential Hardware Reference Manual.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

MD:<\/strong> How do I get such a Manual?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F5:<\/strong> By Sega or Nintendo themselves or the ones you program the games for.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

MD:<\/strong> How expensive is your system? What would I have to pay for it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F5:<\/strong> 7500 ,- DM<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

MD:<\/strong> What do you think: How many modules will you sell?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F5:<\/strong> Our T3 is rated with 90%, and that means: If it reaches a high chartposition, we should sell some hundredthousands.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n

MD:<\/strong> What do you earn of this game? Or would you rather not talk about that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F5:<\/strong> Let me say it in that way: It is enough to live, and too less to buy a house…<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

MD:<\/strong> Do you expect yourself programming games on consoles for your whole life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F5:<\/strong> It would be nice, if Factor 5 would get established, but I also hope, that when we reach a higher age, we will have some young ones to do our job. At the moment it looks quite positive.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

MD:<\/strong> What about the CPU of the Super Famicom? They all complain, that it is too slow…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F5:<\/strong> Well, Holger, the coder of the Famicom-version, is an excellent coder: 40-50 Sprites inclusive the game… But you are right: The Famicom-CPU is much worse than the one of the Genesis. On the Genesis, I’m able to zoom in realtime!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n

MD:<\/strong> Your plans for the Amiga? Will there be a conversion of T3 on the Amiga?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F5:<\/strong> Look at B.C. Kid… Fact is: The number of sold games for the consoles beat the ones for the Amiga by factor 10 to 20!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

MD:<\/strong> And what about new computers e.g. the Falcon 030 or the new Amigas?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F5:<\/strong> People who like hi-tech simulations will play on the PC, people who like arcade-action will choose a console.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

MD:<\/strong> Don’t you think, that the consoles will die again as they did at the beginning of the 80’s?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F5:<\/strong> Not if the old mistakes will not be done. I think, at that time it was too early for consoles. Another thing to mention is, that the quality of the games is much better than 10 years ago. Also look at the fact, that the Super Famicom was sold about 30 millon times.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

MD:<\/strong> When will Super Turrican and Turrican III be available?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F5:<\/strong> About spring.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

R\u00fcckblickend – wir haben nun Mitte Mai 2020 – finde ich folgende Dinge bemerkenswert: Die kaum versteckten Aussagen zur katastrophalen wirtschaftlichen Situation auf dem Amiga, was die Erfolgsaussichten von Spielen angeht („Faktor 10-20 \u00fcber denen des Amigas“) und dass die neuen Amigas und Ataris f\u00fcr gestandene Entwickler gar keine Rolle spielen („Simulationen auf dem PC, Actionspiele auf Konsolen“).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Als Amiga-Fan wollte man es damals einfach nicht h\u00f6ren oder wahrhaben. Dazu z\u00e4hle ich auch mich selbst, denn sonst h\u00e4tten wir nie versucht, im Jahr 1993 ein Amiga-Spiel (siehe Bild links) neu zu entwickeln – ohne ein bekanntes Franchise im R\u00fccken, ohne die grafische, musikalische und technische Wucht und Bekanntheit, wie sie zum Beispiel Factor 5 hatten (und die dennoch den Amiga mieden). Andererseits war es mir doch irgendwie bewusst, wie ich in meinem R\u00fcckblick auf die Amiga-Messen in K\u00f6ln geschrieben habe. Ich glaube, es war da auch viel Hoffnung im Spiel, dass wir bei einem Erfolg den n\u00e4chsten Schritt Richtung PC und Konsole h\u00e4tten gehen k\u00f6nnten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ebenfalls bemerkenswert finde ich die Aussage, dass die Konsolen seiner Meinung nach nicht mehr verschwinden werden. Das stimmte nicht nur, sondern im Gegenteil – AAA-Spiele sind (Stand Mitte Mai 2020) in punkto Umsatz, Entwicklungszeit und Budget mit Hollywood-Produktionen vergleichbar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
